| Wednesday, November 6, 2024 | | Good morning! On this day in 1865, the Confederate naval ship Shenandoah reached port in England, only to learn that the Civil War had ended months before. The ship's commander then officially lowered the Confederate flag for a final time. It was a late night at Flyover headquarters, and perhaps at your home as well, but the night ended with finality. Despite not getting Virginia's 13 electoral votes, former President Trump won the presidential election, giving his victory speech in the late hours of the night. Along with the political roundup, we will preview the debut of UVA's new basketball coach and, in business news, bring you the latest on the opioid crisis. | Donald Trump Wins Presidential Election Donald Trump won the White House for a second time last night, taking Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Georgia, and leading in the other swing states as of 2 a.m. ET. He lost in Virginia in a race closer than polls had predicted. Vice President Kamala Harris won with 51.7% of the vote to Trump's 46.5%, earning the state's 13 electoral votes. Nationally, Trump also appeared to win the popular vote. At 2 a.m. he had 66.5 million votes to Vice President Kamala Harris’ 61.6 million. In his first election, Trump won the Electoral College but lost the popular vote. Harris campaign officials said she would make no statement Tuesday night as her supporters began leaving her watch party at Howard University. | Senate Race/House Races Incumbent Senator Tim Kaine held off a challenge from Republican Hung Cao to win a third term. Fox News called the race for Kaine with about 75% of the vote counted. There were several contested House races across the Commonwealth's 11 Congressional districts. Coming into the night, six seats were held by Democrats and five by Republicans. With nine races called, it looks likely that the delegation will remain 6-5 Democrat. Winners included John McGuire in the 5th District and Suhas Subramanyam in the 10th. Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson showed how vital the Commonwealth is when he hosted rallies for two candidates on Monday. Johnson's intervention didn't pan out in the 7th, as Democrat Eugene Vindman held the seat for Democrats. However, Rep. Jen Kiggans seems on track to hold her 2nd District seat. | Constitutional Amendment Virginians agree that our state should do more to help the spouses of servicemembers who are killed in action. Voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment that read: "Should the Constitution of Virginia be amended so that the tax exemption that is currently available to the surviving spouses of soldiers killed in action is also available to the surviving spouses of soldiers who died in the line of duty?" The amendment earned more than 93% of the vote. Finally, as is always the case, some voters were forced to wait in line to cast a ballot on Election Day. But a man in Virginia Beach imposed his wait on himself. He arrived 2-and-a-half hours before polls opened. "I wanted to vote early, I didn’t want to stand and wait,” Bill Cunningham said. “I’ve been here since 3:30 a.m.” Like The Virginia Flyover? Share it with a friend! | |
