Article Icon 1 Experts Warn Texans To Watch Out For Scams

The holiday shopping season is officially upon us, and while some retailers are offering eye-popping deals, experts warn to be on the lookout for scams.

"Especially this time of year, don't let your guard down," said Jason Meza of the Better Business Bureau.

According to the BBB, Texans’ losses from scams jumped from $2 million in 2022 to $9 million 2023. This year alone, the Federal Trade Commission received reports of online shopping scams totaling more than $300 million nationwide.

Kathy Stokes with AARP warns shoppers to be wary of gift cards and to avoid using peer-to-peer banking services like Venmo or CashApp with retailers since they have fewer protections than credit cards.

Although detecting scams has become more challenging in recent years, Meza offered this timeless advice: "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."

Article Icon 1 Landman Explores Life in the Permian Basin

Landman, a new Paramount+ series created by Taylor Sheridan and starring Billy Bob Thornton, Jon Hamm, and Demi Moore, will explore the modern oil boom in the Permian Basin of West Texas.

Inspired by the 2019 Texas Monthly podcast Boomtown, the show follows Thornton as crisis executive Tommy Norris, navigating the challenges of land acquisition and crew management in the volatile oil business.

Most of the filming for the series took place in and around Fort Worth, the site of the elite Petroleum Club and the headquarters for the American Association of Professional Landmen, both of which are featured in the show.

Scenes were also shot on the campus of Texas Christian University, where the daughter of one of the characters competes in track and field. The show debuted last week.

The newest trend in real estate

Forget DIY renovations. Co-ownership could do to real estate what Uber did to taxis.

It’s simple: buyers share ownership of a high-value asset, splitting costs while enjoying all the benefits. And it’s spreading like wildfire – growing 21% per year.

Take vacation homes, for example. They’re expensive to own and vacant most of the year. Co-ownership lets people fully utilize these properties at a fraction of the cost.

Companies like Pacaso are already leading the charge. Through their digital marketplace, users buy, sell, and finance vacation home shares. It’s been a huge success. They’ve already handed keys to 1,500+ happy homeowners, earning Pacaso $100m in gross profits.

And for the first time, everyday investors can own Pacaso stock. Learn more about investing in Pacaso before their share price changes 12/5.
