Article Icon 1Abbott: School Choice Has the Votes

Gov. Greg Abbott visited a private school in Tyler yesterday to discuss his plans for school choice legislation in next year's session. He claims that after Tuesday's election, there are now enough votes to pass a plan to provide state funding for private education or homeschooling.

A handful of Republicans in the Texas House thwarted an effort during the previous session to introduce education savings accounts. Abbott spent over $11 million to help elect more members favorable to state-funded alternatives to public schools.

While polls show a majority of Texans support the policy, critics say it would take money away from public schools and question how state funding for alternative education is compatible with increasing teacher pay and investing in workforce readiness programs.

Erica Lee Carter, daughter of the late Sheila Jackson Lee, was elected to fill the remainder of the longtime Houston Congresswoman's term, defeating two Republican candidates. Voters elected former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner to succeed Carter when her partial term ends on Jan. 3.

State Rep. Julie Johnson (D-Farmers Branch) was elected to occupy the seat in the U.S. House of Representatives vacated by Colin Allred. Johnson will be the first openly gay person elected to Congress from the South.

And Henry Cuellar (D-Laredo) was reelected to an eleventh term despite being indicted on federal bribery and money laundering charges earlier this year. Cuellar's trial is scheduled for March.

Article Icon 1Republicans Make Gains In Texas House

Republicans picked up two seats in the Texas House and are sending a markedly more conservative delegation to Austin next year after several moderates lost in the primaries.

Denise Villalobos defeated Solomon Ortiz to succeed retiring Democrat Abel Herrero in Corpus Christi, while former Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin Jr. defeated Democrat Cecilia Castellano to replace outgoing Democrat Tracy King.

Shelley Luther, the former Dallas salon owner who was jailed after reopening her business during the COVID-19 pandemic, was elected after unsuccessful runs for the Texas Senate in 2020 and the Texas House in 2022.

And Katrina Pierson, Donald Trump's former campaign spokeswoman, won an uncontested race to represent Rockwall.

The upheaval in the Texas House has thrown the race for speaker into doubt, as 48 Republicans have announced their support for David Cook of Mansfield over current speaker Dade Phelan.
