What would happen if you went shopping TOMORROW, instead of today?

Hi reader,

This might be a bit obvious, but an easy way to save money is to simply NOT go grocery shopping. It's pretty easy to NOT spend money, but when you don't go to the store, right?

Sometimes the seasons of life will dictate how often I shop. When the kids are in school we have a regular routine which includes my grocery shopping. Our school year runs 10 months a year, so this is our "normal."

But what about the other two months? How do the kids being home change grocery shopping?

Surprisingly, I'm not shopping as often!

This is partly because I'm stocking up on the great summer produce deals…

  • Cherries for 98¢/lb
  • Blueberries for $1/pint
  • Strawberries for 98¢/lb

But it's also because I'm making more of an effort to DELAY grocery shopping – even by just one day – because I know this method alone sparks creativity and saves money in multiple ways.

Several years ago, we went on a "no spending challenge." The goal was to make it one month where the only money we spent was earned outside of the regular paycheck. We still paid our bills and rent, but anything else – groceries, gas, gifts, vacations, etc. – was frozen.

Aside from the fact that we had enough food to last us 33 days, I learned A LOT through that no spending challenge.

Anytime I push back grocery shopping by one or two days, I learn a few more things:

  • Grocery store deals don't stop just because I stop shopping. They have a life of their own and they will be waiting for me when I'm ready to shop again.
  • Missing out on deals doesn't mean I spent more. I actually spent LESS because we were eating what we already had.
  • Frame of mind is everything. Missing a deal from last week's ad means taking advantage of this week's ad. There is no, "Oh man, I missed out on the cherries last week." Instead, it's "Oh wow, look at the great deal on strawberries this week!"
  • Planning is essential – meal planning, grocery shopping planning, what to do with leftovers… it's all necessary and key.
