Trump Wins Nomination, Taps Vance as VP

Former President Trump won the formal nomination for president from cheering delegates at the GOP national convention Monday. Earlier in the day, he announced Ohio Senator JD Vance as his running mate.

The 39-year-old Vance is a Yale-educated venture capitalist and a first-term senator. Before entering politics, Vance authored Hillbilly Elegy, a bestselling memoir that was later adapted into a film.

Vance was an outspoken critic of Trump in the run-up to the 2020 election but has since become an ardent supporter of the former president. Trump endorsed Vance during the 2022 Senate midterm elections.

Trump cited Vance’s military service, business success, and moral values as factors in his decision. “After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator JD Vance,” Trump said.

Judge Dismisses Trump Documents Case

A federal judge in Florida dismissed the classified documents case against former President Trump on Monday, ruling that the special counsel prosecuting the case was illegally appointed by the Justice Department.

Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Jack Smith as special counsel in 2022 to oversee federal investigations into Trump’s handling of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach after he left office.

Judge Cannon found the appointment unconstitutional, citing the Appointments Clause, which requires "Officers of the United States" to be appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate.

Trump applauded the ruling and demanded that his three other criminal cases also be thrown out. Democrats urged an immediate appeal.

Mona Lisa's Grand Estate For Sale

The 16th-century grand estate of the real Mona Lisa’s family is up for sale, listed at nearly $20 million and boasting 14 bedrooms and 15 bathrooms on 67 acres outside Florence, Italy. Pictures are here.

At one time, the 30,000-square-foot estate belonged to the family of Francesco del Giocondo, husband of Lisa del Giocondo, whom many scholars believe was the model for Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting.

The estate features a main villa and numerous additional structures, including a caretaker's house, buildings for agricultural use, a private chapel, a swimming pool, and a tennis court. It includes gardens, tree-lined avenues, and a large forest.
