Stop Overcomplicating the Process!

Hey there reader

The other day I was reading through the Facebook Group. Whenever I need some motivation, I love to look at the meal prep and recipe photos and read through all of the questions and responses.

Today as I was skimming through the group, I noticed a few comments from members expressing confusion and being overwhelmed. Another member talked about feeling burnt out from trying to do everything.

I understand, have been there, and have a solution.

Often I talk about taking it slow. When you try to overhaul your life in one day (or week), you set yourself up for failure. Also, expecting results too soon can be a recipe for disaster.

But I want to mention another factor that can sabotage your weight loss efforts, and that's overcomplicating the process.

There's a gadget, website, and app for everything that has to do with weight loss and a healthy lifestyle.

There are more different eating methods than I can keep track of, and all of them think they're right and the others are wrong. It's crazy when you think about it.

As great as it is to have access to so many resources, it's also easy to become overwhelmed and lost among the sea of weight loss information. Trust me, I know.

Don't overcomplicate the weight loss process. At the end of the day, it's pretty straightforward. Eat less, move more. I know there's more to it than that, but keeping the process simple will keep it manageable.

Let me give you a couple of examples from readers I've come to know over the years.

An OYS reader felt overwhelmed with meal planning. She was drowning in recipes found on Pinterest and didn't know where to start with meal planning for her family. She came across all these beautiful meal planning boards and intricate systems but didn't know how or where to start. Can you guess what she did? She figured it was too complicated, so she didn't bother.

Another reader wanted to start exercising. She bought a Fitbit, a gym membership, signed up for a couple of exercise apps, and joined an exercise challenge group. Sounds good, right? Well, she couldn't figure out her Fitbit, had no idea what to do at the gym, the apps made no sense to her, and she couldn't keep up with the challenge. She gave up after a week because she didn't see results and had no clue how to work any of the tools she bought and signed up for.

The last reader I want to mention wanted to meal prep. Yay! She joined the OYS Facebook group, saved a bunch of recipes, bought all her containers, and planned to make a week's worth of food on Sunday. Great, sounds perfect! The problem happened when she tried to make all the new recipes and felt like if she couldn't prepare it all, why bother. So she didn't prepare anything and ended up wasting food. She got completely overwhelmed.

I'm not saying technology, tools, Pinterest, and FB Groups aren't helpful. Of course, they are - or at least they can be. But it doesn't need to be complicated.

  • Meal planning doesn't need fancy boards or intricate recipes, and all you need to do is sit down with a pen and paper and write out meals for the week. Start with the meals you already eat, and then add new recipes over time.
  • Exercise can be as simple as going for a walk 3 -5 times a week or doing an exercise video in your living room. It's about getting off the couch and moving.
  • Meal prep can be as simple as washing vegetables or preparing mason jar salads for the week. Even the littlest bit of meal prep can make a huge difference in your week. Start with the meal that will make the most significant difference if prepared beforehand.

When starting, it's about forming the habit, not becoming an expert ๐Ÿ‘ˆ read that again!

✅ You want to get in the habit of sitting down every week, thinking about meals, and then writing a meal plan out.

✅ You want to get in the habit of waking up and going to the gym (or exercising after work).

✅ You want to get in the habit of weekly meal prep.

When starting a new habit, my advice is to start where you're at, move forward at a manageable pace, and then add on when you're comfortable.

I'm not advising you against weight loss tools, apps, or fancy things, but if you find yourself overwhelmed because of them, then maybe put it aside and focus on the habit.

Talk soon,

Tammy
