Hi reader,
I'm a very type A person. Lists and planners make my heart sing, and I love checking those boxes!!
But even I get thrown off the meal plan sometimes! When that happens I like to keep these tips in mind:
1. Think about WHY you made a meal plan.
You can plan every meal down to the last cucumber, but it's easy to stray if you don't keep your WHY in mind.
Are you trying to:
- save money?
- reduce waste?
- prevent stress?
- eat healthier?
All of these hold some heavy weight and can give you the push when the meal you planned just doesn't sound that great in the moment.

2. Be flexible. You can stick to your meal plan AND be flexible at the same time.
The key is being prepared with flexibility in mind. Practice might get switched, someone could come down with a stomach bug, or maybe you forgot to thaw the meat. Life is going to happen and throw off the plan.
Don't be afraid to:
- swap your meals
- have a back-up in the freezer or pantry
- bump your meal to the next day and just eat PB&Js.
The meal plan police aren't going to knock on your door if you have to change things up. The important part is to get back on track so your food doesn't go to waste.

3. Plan food your family likes.
A meal plan will never work if you don't have food on the menu that your people will like. You'll end up wasting food and getting frustrated!
Talk to your family:
- what is their favorite type of dish? (meat and potatoes, casserole, ethnic)
- remind them they may not get a favorite every night, but the next night (or so) IS their favorite
go back to the WHY and make it a family goal
Don't hesitate to write down everyone's favorite dishes or note the "ooo's" and "ahh's" on a new dish. Your favorites should go on the list too!
