| About 16 years ago, I was in a ball on the couch, bracing myself against waves of nausea. My toddler pushed a Matchbox car back and forth on the 1-square-foot area of empty space on the carpet. And the sounds of hammers, drills, and saws filled the house. We were having our kitchen totally gutted and remodeled. I was in the first trimester of pregnancy and in the throes of Our small living room had become a combo TV room-kitchen-dining room-Thomas the Tank Engine train depot. In some ways, it was a dark time. To this day, I can't hear the "Backyardigans" theme song or see a box of Hot Pockets in the freezer aisle without being transported to those difficult 10 weeks. But it was worth it. Because our small, 1980s kitchen got a big makeover.
