Click here Friday, 31 May 2024 WHA Highlights Day 5 of the 77th World Health Assembly (31 May) The Seventy-seventh World Health Assembly (WHA) continues at the Palais des Nations in Geneva for the fifth day of meetings. Today, it will meet in Plenary (Room XIX), Committee A (Room XX), Committee B (Room XVII) and in the Drafting group on items 13.3 (IHR) & 13.4 (INB) (Room XXVI). Working hours today are from 09.00 to 12.00; 14.30 to 17.30; and 18.00 to 21.30 CEST. Simultaneous interpretation will be available in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. The Plenary this morning will proceed with the elections for the Executive Board (EB) and will nominate 12 Member States entitled to designate a person to serve on the EB (A77/48). It will also hold an award ceremony for six prizes to individuals or entities in recognition of their outstanding contributions to public health (details on the awards and the winners can be found in A77/INF./1). Committee B will also hear progress reports (A77/33 and A77/33 Add.1) on a range of issues under Pillar 1 (one billion more people benefiting from universal health coverage), including the global health sector strategies HIV, viral hepatitis and sexually transmitted infections; reproductive health; eradication of dracunculiasis; integrated people-centred eye care; human organ and tissue transplantation; and availability, safety and quality of blood products. It will also discuss the preparation for the high-level meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on universal health coverage (resolution WHA72.4 (2019)). Progress reports under Pillar 2 (one billion more people better protected from health emergencies) will include pandemic influenza preparedness: sharing of influenza viruses and access to vaccines and other benefits, and strengthening health emergency preparedness and response in cities and urban settings. Under Pillar 3 (one billion more people enjoying better health and well-being), Committee B will hear progress reports on the WHO global strategy for food safety; reducing public health risks associated with the sale of live wild animals of mammalian species in traditional food markets; global strategy and plan of action on public health, innovation and intellectual property, and more. Under Pillar 4 (more effective and efficient WHO providing better support to countries), Committee B will hear the progress report on the implementation of the strategy for integrating gender analysis and actions into the work of WHO (resolution WHA60.25 (2007)) The strategic roundtable: Charting a new path forward for global action against antimicrobial resistance will focus on how Member States can build on human health discussions and accelerate global response to AMR. The strategic roundtable will have Ministers of Health, representatives from partner organizations and survivor advocates providing a forum for dialogue, and will address specific priorities outlined in the WHO’s strategic and operational priorities to address drug-resistant bacterial infections.
