You're not going to believe this.
I have a major update on our Kellogg's campaign.
As you may know, in March my dear friend and activist Jason Karp hired one of the top lawyers in the country and sent a letter to Kellogg's demanding that they sell Americans the same cereals they sell in other countries without artificial dyes and BHT.
He asked for a meeting with Kellogg's Board of Directors and stated that he "will not hesitate to hold Kellogg's leadership accountable".
I have been following their every move since then, as we continue racking up thousands of signatures on our Kellogg's Petition asking them to get these harmful dyes out of their cereals.
Soon after Kellogg's received this letter from Jason's lawyer, they responded.
They agreed to a meeting, but only on these terms…
Kellogg's would have a "top executive" from the Consumer's Brands Association, along with a scientist selected by them, and a high-level Kellogg's representative at the meeting.
They wanted Jason to come completely ALONE to the meeting.
They were planning to stonewall him with a scientist and lobbyist from the Consumer Brands Association, which is a food industry trade association who lobbies for policies that support junk food brands.
Consumer Brands Association is the rebranded version of the Grocery Manufacturers Association, who was responsible for funneling millions of dollars into campaigns to fight GMO labels.
This trade group is currently fighting bills in several states that are seeking to ban artificial ingredients from our food. They represent their members, which includes Kellogg's, General Mills, Nestle, Kraft Heinz, and Smuckers (some of the worst offenders with artificial dyes in their products).
Jason agreed to a meeting, as long as he could ALSO bring two experts of his own.
Kellogg's refused!
They said that Jason had "changed the nature of the meeting" and that they were only willing to organize the conversation around the "science" that these dyes are safe and used in a "small percentage" of their products. They would not budge on allowing him to bring anyone to the meeting.
On May 14th, Kellogg abruptly canceled the meeting with Jason:
"As we agreed, we worked with the Consumer Brands Association to pull together independent experts in this space for the discussion…We now understand from (Jason's) statements that he is no longer interested in discussing the science with regulatory experts or my clients. With this in mind, I advised my client that it would not be productive for all involved to conduct the meeting. That being the case, we will advise the industry and scientific experts that the meeting will not proceed."
What cowards! Kellogg's is running scared, but we won't back down.
I will deliver our petition signatures to their doorstep, and this will happen very soon.
And I won't be coming alone!
I'll be inviting YOU and the entire Food Babe Army to join me for a rally, along with celebrities and fellow activists who are leading the charge with us.
Let's convince Kellogg's that it's time to do the right thing for American families.
It would be incredible to have 100,000 petition signatures before we arrive.
WE ARE SO CLOSE, but I need your help.
Please share this petition today on your social media channels. Call up your friends and family and ask them to sign and make history with us!
Thank you for everything you're doing to get the word out.
You've also got to check out this new Bloomberg article about Kellogg's. Their spinoff company Kellanova just announced they're removing artificial dyes from Pop Tarts. This makes Kellogg's look even more negligent in keeping these same harmful dyes in their cereals. They know these dyes cause harm, yet they are turning a blind eye to make bigger profits. Shameful!
They can't keep up this charade for much longer. I can't wait for them to finally announce that they will do the right thing and remove these toxic dyes from their cereals. It will make a huge difference in so many lives.
Xo,
Vani
