Hi reader,
I have to confess: members in Grocery Budget Mastermind ask the best questions.
They're constantly sharpening each other's skills (and mine!). For example, the last time we talked, they asked: - How do you expose kids to new foods without wasting anything?
- When you buy in bulk, how much bulk is too much?
- How can you meal plan, when you're not sure if your picky teens will want to eat at all?
- Can you share YOUR shopping routine?
These are just a few topics from my last class, but during one teaching session, we specifically talked about that last question - my grocery shopping routine.
Everyone's shopping routine will look different, and it might even change from season to season. I'm still working out my new routine since I've moved to a 30 acre farm! Hopefully soon we will be eating more of what we grow and less from the grocery stores.
When I was still in Atlanta, here's the routine that I used for most of the school year:
Monthly (or Every Other Month): Costco and ALDI
I have very specific lists for both stores and I buy enough to last 4-8 weeks.
Weekly: Walmart and Sprouts
I make our meal plan Sunday afternoons and place a Walmart grocery pick-up order. I schedule to pick it up on Mondays, after I take the kids to school.
Also on Sundays, I spend 10-15 minutes researching prices for just one item... like einkorn flour or chocolate chips or coconut oil. I look into all of my online sources and compare them to my price book to see who has the rock bottom price. Then I update my price book accordingly, and going forward, I know where to buy that item from.
I go into Sprouts on Wednesday mornings, right after I drop off the kids at school. Wednesdays are "double ad" days, when the old sale circular and the new sale circular overlap.
As-needed: Kroger
I don't do major grocery shopping at Kroger, but I do swing in from time to time if Walmart makes a substitution I don't want, or if they're out of stock on something and I can't wait until I go to Sprouts on Wednesday.
Kroger also has the best clearance section, so I make a point to stop by at least every couple weeks just to see what's on the shelf.
By sticking to this shopping schedule, I'm able to get everything I need AND not make any last minute trips to the store.
Coming up with a shopping routine does NOT happen overnight - or even over just a couple weeks - so don't beat yourself up if you don't have one right now or if yours isn't as "nice and pretty" as mine.
But I do want you to work on it, because not only does having a shopping routine save you money, but it also saves you sanity too!

PS: Can I let you in on a little secret? The grocery stores are NOT on your side! After years of researching stores and prices and tracking sales, I learned the ins and outs of successfully shopping at the grocery store, without spending a penny more than I should.
I teach these techniques in my FREE mini-course Grocery Savings Made Simple. Thousands of families have joined this free training and have easily saved hundreds of dollars each. Just by applying these simple strategies!
