Small Business Pulse Survey Updates: Phase 7

Based on responses collected November 20 through December 5, the Small Business Pulse Survey estimates that:

  • 43.9% of U.S. small businesses experienced domestic supplier delays & 19.3% experienced foreign supplier delays in the last week. For responses collected 11/22-11/28, these were 45.8% & 20.7% respectively

In the last week, did this business have any of the following?
  • 31.0% of U.S. small businesses experienced large or moderate increase in demand for their business's goods or services compared to the norm pre-3/13/20. For responses collected 11/22-11/28/21, this was 32.8%

  • 15.6% of U.S. small businesses experienced a decrease in number of hours worked by paid employees in the last week. For responses collected 11/22-11/28, this was 12.8%

  • 32.5% of U.S. construction small businesses experienced a moderate increase in prices compared to the norm pre-3/13/20. For responses collected 11/22-11/28/21, this statistic was 26.2%

  • 36.5% of U.S. Accommodation & Food Services small businesses experienced a decrease in revenues in the last week. For responses collected 11/22-11/28, this statistic was 31.4%

  • 51.5% of U.S. Manufacturing & 38.4% of Retail small businesses expect to identify and hire new employees in the next 6 months. The national average for this statistic was 40.2%

On Dec. 1, 2021, the U.S. Census Bureau announced the beginning of data collection for phase 3.3 of the experimental Household Pulse Survey (HPS). The HPS is now a monthly release. Phase 3.3 includes updated vaccination questions that expand response options for the number of doses and brand of COVID-19 vaccine received. It also reinstates questions on unemployment insurance benefits and public transit and ridesharing – and continues to ask about the Child Tax Credit, sexual orientation and gender identity, rent/mortgage arrears, utility arrears and restrictions, summer catch-up education activities for grades K-12, and preventive health care for children.
