How to take care of Non Stick Pans

Hey reader reader,

I'm Richa, the face behind My Food Story. Welcome to this series where I'll be sending you an email exclusive tip/recipe every Wednesday!

Here's today's Tip/Kitchen Hack:

Non Stick Pans - we can't live without them right? They are super handy and almost essential for things like scrambled eggs, crepes etc. But the downside is that they can also scratch easily, the coating can come off etc.

So here are my simple tips to prolong the life of your non stick pans and take care of them so they last you longer:

  • One of the most important rules is not to use metal spoons on them. Metal slowly corrodes the top layer of a non-stick pan making it harmful in the long run. Instead use rubber or silicone or even wooden spoons.
  • Wash gently. Do not use a metal, plastic or coir scrub on non-stick pans. If you're trying to remove grease, use warm water, dish soap, lemon wedges and a soft sponge.
  • Another important thing is to store your pans right - either hang them, or use a soft cloth between each pan while stacking them on top of each other.
  • Never add cold liquid to a hot pan. Always add oil, water or stock to a pan and then turn on the flame. Do not subject your pan to drastic temperature changes! Don't overheat your pan. If an empty pan is heated on high heat or taken up to the point where it starts smoking, it will cause the non-stick layer to warp, making it lose some of its non-stick properties.
  • Use high quality pans - Vinod Cookware and Bergner are reliable brands and remember, while they may seem expensive - it is a long term investment. This affects everything from your everyday cooking to health and safety. Trust me, it makes all the difference!
  • Look for PFOA free pans which is a harmful chemical that's present in many non stick brands

Hope this helps!! Is there anything else you need help with? Reply and tell me and I'll make sure to include it in my next few emails.

Happy Cooking,

Richa Gupta
