Why we’re taking an entire year “off” from life.

Hi reader,

I have something REALLY exciting to share with you, but I need to give you the backstory first.

My son's birthday is in October. We started homeschooling kindergarten with him in California when he was 4 because the cut-off date to start school was November 1. We figured, "Why not give it a shot? If he has a hard time, we'll just go super slow."

This was opportunity number 1.

Turns out, he's a smart kid. We homeschooled on schedule through 1st grade and 2nd grade, and then we felt the nudge to send the kids to school for 3rd grade (and 1st grade for my daughter).

This was opportunity number 2.

That same fall, my husband took a job that would relocate us to Atlanta, GA. When we arrived, we enrolled both kids in the same grade they were in California.

This was opportunity number 3.

Both kids excelled academically, so we just kept on going with the next grade and next grade… When my son finished 5th grade, we moved both kids to a school that went through 8th grade. This was a great move for both kids and we really loved the school.

This was opportunity number 4.

My son just finished 8th grade and he's 13… with an October birthday, it means starting high school at 13. While he can handle it academically, maturity-wise, he's simply not ready for high school.

This is where we are now.

I guess the fifth time's a charm, eh?

After much prayer, consideration and family discussions with the kids, we've decided to take a skip year as a family - we couldn't be more excited!! (And to be honest, we're scared too!)

What is a skip year?

A skip year is simply where you "skip" the normal stuff you do and do something else instead. Of course this looks different for every family, but here's what it's looking like for us:

  • Homeschool The Boy for "Freshman Year Part 1" (he chose the name)
  • Homeschool The Girl for 7th grade
  • Travel as much as we can (given the ever-changing travel requirements, LOL)

Our Travel Itinerary Part 1: The Epic Road Trip

Last year (pre-COVID) we planned a summer trip to the national parks. Obviously that trip didn't happen, and that's why we're so excited that part 1 of our skip year is an Epic Road Trip, spending EIGHT WEEKS traveling out west, visiting no less than TWELVE national parks.

I'll be sharing insights into our skip year as it unfolds on Instagram and Facebook, so be sure to follow me there for the latest updates (including how we're making all of our meals with just an Instant Pot and griddle… oh yeah, did I mention we won't have a refrigerator?!)

Are you curious about our skip year? Do you have any questions about logistics or why we're doing something? Hit "reply" and I'll make sure to answer them in the upcoming weeks!
