Small Business Pulse Survey Updates

Based on responses collected July 5  through July 11, the Small Business Pulse Survey estimates that:

  • 19.6% of U.S. small businesses reported a decrease in operating revenues in the last week. For responses collected 6/14/20 – 6/20/20, this statistic was 42.5%

  • 22.8% of U.S. small businesses report their business has returned to normal level of operations
  • U.S. small businesses are continuing to experience supply chain disruptions with 38.2% reporting domestic supplier delays in the last week. For responses collected 6/28 – 7/4, this statistic was 38.1%
  • Supply chain disruptions continue to impact U.S. small businesses, with 18.5% reporting difficulty locating alternative domestic suppliers in the last week. For responses collected 6/28-7/4, this statistic was 18.7%
  • 27.9% of U.S. construction small businesses report current operating capacity to be affected by availability of supplies or inputs in the last week
  • 53.8% of U.S. Accommodation and Food Services small businesses expect to identify and hire new employees in the next six months
  • The Overall Sentiment Index, which assesses the overall average effect of the pandemic on businesses, increased to -0.40 from the prior week, indicating a less negative sentiment for responses

This week's results are the last for Phase 3.1. Plans for the following phase are underway.

Based on responses collected June 23 – July 5, 2021, the Household Pulse Survey estimates that:

  • Of adults living in households with children, 8.3% were in households where children were unable to attend daycare/another childcare arrangement because of the coronavirus pandemic in the last 4 weeks
  • Of adults living in households with children, 22.8% were in homes where children had an appointment with a doctor, nurse, or other health professional by video or phone in the last 4 weeks
  • Of adults living in households with children enrolled in public/private school, 18.6% were in households where students received food assistance from school in the last 7 days
  • 24.5% of American adults had an appointment with a doctor, nurse, or other health professional by video or by phone in the last 4 weeks
  • 36.8% of adults are planning to take overnight trips or trips to places more than 100 miles away in the next 4 weeks
  • 12.2% of American adults expect someone in their household to experience a loss in employment income in the next 4 weeks
  • 23.5% of adults live in households where at least one adult teleworked because of the coronavirus pandemic in the last 7 days
  • 9.7% of American adults lived in households where there was either sometimes or often not enough to eat in the previous 7 days
  • 6.4% of adults are not current on their rent or mortgage payment and have slight or no confidence in making their next payment on time
  • Of adults living in households not current on rent or mortgage, 35.8% report eviction or foreclosure in the next two months is somewhat or very likely
  • 27.1% of adults live in households where it has been somewhat or very difficult to pay usual household expenses in the last 7 days
