  COPEG and OIRSA Signing

On July 27, 2021 COPEG General Directors hosted the Executive Director and other representatives from the International Regional Organization for Agricultural Health (OIRSA:  https://www.oirsa.org/) at Screwworm Program facilities in Pacora, Panama.

In addition to touring the facilities, OIRSA and COPEG Directors signed an agreement to strengthen international regional capacity to detect, identify, and respond to New World Screwworm in free areas.  The agreement leverages opportunities for COPEG to engage regionally on a broader scale through training on various screwworm-related subjects; raise awareness among member states on the work COPEG accomplishes to protect screwworm free areas north of Panama and the importance of ongoing surveillance; and facilitate rapid response to screwworm outbreaks should they occur.  The agreement was signed within the context of the 15 year anniversary celebration of the construction and inauguration of the sterile New World Screwworm mass-rearing facility in Pacora, Panama, and strategically positions the program as the world's leading expert on screwworm control and eradication.
