Stemming the Humanitarian Crisis in Northern Central America
Read this email in your browser. | | Tomorrow’s FP Virtual Dialogue, with support from World Vision and the World Bank, will look at the worsening humanitarian crisis across northern Central America and explore strategies focused on governance and resilience to address the root causes of forced migration. Ricardo Zúñiga, U.S. Special Envoy for the Northern Triangle, Luis Fernando Suazo, Ambassador of Honduras to the U.S. and others will discuss what’s misunderstood about the challenges facing the region and how international partners can work more effectively to achieve greater security and prosperity. The compounding effects of political instability, economic insecurity, violence, and climate change have been deteriorating conditions in Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, forcing people to leave their homes in search of safety and opportunity. COVID-19 has further exacerbated the situation, but also has brought acute focus on a complex crisis that requires new approaches to humanitarian aid and regional development. The Biden Administration has ramped up diplomatic efforts to mobilize international cooperation and cross-sector commitments to support governance and local capacity-building. Experts are advocating for long-term investments that would cultivate an enabling environment for regional stability and development and help foster resilience in local communities.
Join us to hear from leaders working on new policy approaches and implementation strategies to stem forced migration. Our program also will provide insights from a first-of-its-kind FP Simulation focused on fostering resilience in northern Central America.
