Good Sunday evening. Have you done your grocery shopping for the week yet? If your weekly run involves Costco, may I recommend a tub of their rather good yogurt-dill-and-cucumber-put-on-everything-tzatziki sauce? My husband's family was in town last weekend, and this turned into a quiet star of my feed-a-crowd game plan. I bought it just to put out with veggies as an easy dip, but we used it at least three more ways
Of course, tzatziki can be found beyond Costco (and we have an excellent recipe for it here). But it's a good example of how one big tub of a good sauce can make your life easier and delicious in so many ways.
In fact, a good sauce can make all of summer cooking so easy — but there are so many options it can be overwhelming. We set ourselves the question: What are the essential sauces for right now? We landed on five, and here they are: This summer's take on ranch — an herby tahini ranch with all the herbs. (Very good on avocado toast, as Sara points out.) On the barbecue front, the winner this summer is blueberry BBQ sauce, a savory and smoky recipe from Andrea Mathis. If you're craving a pesto or chimichurri then this lemongrass cilantro sauce will satisfy you. For THE tomato sauce of the summer, Valeria Necchio draws from her Venetian family repertoire for an uncooked, marinated take on sugo di pomodoro fresco. And finally, our fifth essential sauce is Will Coleman's brilliant take on green goddess: Green Goddess Pesto Sauce.
While not officially part of this sauce essentials package, I also want to recommend Jesse's two-ingredient homemade Magic Shell — because doesn't ice cream also deserve the best sauce we can give it?
Happy saucing, Faith
