Brazil: Brazil Seeks Public Comments to Support Plant-Based Regulatory Policies

On June 11, 2021, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MAPA) issued a notice soliciting public comments on the "Plant-Based Regulatory Discussion." The objective is to allow wide dissemination and the participation of associations, entities, companies, or people who want to contribute to the discussion on processed products of plant origin. The deadline for public comments is September 10, 2021.

India: Cotton and Products Update June 2021

Post forecasts MY 2021/22 cotton production at 29 million 480 lb. bales on an area of 12.9 million hectares. Kharif cotton planting is underway across India, however the pace of sowing is lagging in all states due to delayed winter crop harvest and delayed monsoon. The cotton minimum support price (MSP) was recently increased by four percent for MY 2021/22. Cotton shipments in May were the highest on record in the past eight years, indicating strong recovery in export demand. Post expects domestic consumption to rebound gradually as states relax lockdown measures that will allow retail stores to operate again.

Pakistan: Grain and Feed Update

Pakistan's MY 2021/22 wheat production is estimated at a record 27 million metric tons (MMT). The government has currently procured 5.8 MMT of wheat from this year's harvest against its target of 6.3 MMT. The government is allowing the importation of up to 3 MMT of wheat duty free. The actual volume of wheat imports during MY 2021/22 will depend on the response of the private sector and market conditions in the country. The MY 2021/22 wheat import estimate is increased from 1 MMT to 2 MMT. MY 2020/21 and MY 2021/22 wheat exports are increased to 500,000 and 600,000 tons, respectively, in response to enhanced cross border trade with Afghanistan. Pakistan has so far exported around 2.2 MMT of rice during MY 2020/21 (November-October). The rice forecast remains unchanged.

Philippines: Livestock and Poultry Update

In response to market conditions, including recently revised market access for imports, Post has hiked its pork import forecast to 425,000 MT for 2021. Meanwhile, sustained supply constraints lead to Post lowering its chicken import forecast to 330,000 MT.
