Brazil: Export Opportunities for US Wines

Brazil reached robust sales growth figures for wines in 2020, reaching 380 million liters or 15 percent higher compared to 2019. There is market potential for U.S. wines as Brazilian consumers become more interested in wines. The imports of fine wine continue to grow and the beverage is becoming more popular in the market. The U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food Supply (MAPA) are engaging in technical discussions to address testing requirements. MAPA also released a public consultation on July 9, 2021, to propose changes to its regulation (Normativa 14), covering the wine sector quality standards. The consultation will close 75 days after its initial announcement.

Canada: Grain and Feed Update

Intense heatwaves, strong winds, and lower-than-average precipitation will negatively impact MY 2021/22 wheat production in vast areas of the Canadian prairies. Parts of Ontario also experienced dryness but later received significant rain, resulting in the lodging of winter wheat. Demand from China continues to drive wheat exports in MY 2020/21. Strong global demand is expected to draw down ending stocks of durum, resulting in a stocks-to-use ratio of only ten percent in MY 2020/21.

Japan: Japan Releases Details on Agricultural Export Expansion Plan

The Government of Japan (GOJ) published a report outlining measures to address next steps in the Export Expansion Action Strategy for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Products and Food. The GOJ intends to facilitate investment in export facilities and export logistics throughout food and agricultural supply chains to achieve its goal of growing exports of these products to two trillion yen (US$19 billion) in 2025 and five trillion yen (US$48 billion) in 2030. The GOJ intends to reinforce its export support system and to provide industry groups a legal basis to administer commodity checkoff systems modeled after those overseen by USDA.

Mexico: Expected Changes to US Skin and Hide Import Requirements

This report updates a June 23, 2021 FAS Mexico City (MX2021-0034) notification to U.S. exporters of raw bovine skins and hides on changing import requirements for those products. Due to pending revisions to the import requirement sheet (HRZ), U.S. exporters are encouraged to work very closely with their Mexican counterparts (importer, customs broker, etc.) and with National Service of Food Quality and Safety's (SENASICA) personnel to receive the latest import indications.

South Africa: Impact of the Ongoing Civil Unrest in South Africa on Food and the Agricultural Sector

Areas within two South African provinces have been plunged into violent civil unrest following protests on the imprisonment of former President Jacob Zuma on July 8, 2021. This has resulted in the blocking of major roads, widespread looting of shops, and burning of vehicles, shopping malls and businesses. While the specific costs and implications of the civil unrest to the food and agricultural sector are still to be accurately ascertained, the detrimental effects are becoming evident and continue unfolding with some analysts estimating the damage to be more than USD$1 Billion. Of major concern, is the closure of the Durban Port and major roads, which may affect U.S. food and agricultural exports if it continues.

Ukraine: Ukraine Adopts New Labeling Rules for Selected Food Products

The Government of Ukraine adopted new labeling requirements for country of origin or place of origin for selected food products on April 1, 2021. These new requirements cover beef, pork and poultry products, honey, and olive oil and will go into effect on May 18, 2024. The regulation is adopted to fulfill Ukraine's obligations under its Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area Agreement with the European Union. These new requirements apply to both domestically produced and imported products and demand detailed monitoring and transfer of information about the food products' country/countries of origin or place of origin throughout the entire production and sales cycle so that this information can be stated on the product label.
