July 2021 Welcome to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition's (CFSAN) News for Educators! Check out our latest information and materials for educating your consumer groups. We also encourage you to share this update and invite your colleagues to sign up for future issues! Food Safety Summer is barbecue season, and that means lots of opportunities to take meals outside! But eating outdoors in warm weather can be challenging when it comes to food safety. Bacteria in food multiply faster at warmer temperatures, so summer heat can pose a problem. Share these barbecue basics with your audiences to keep them, their families, and their friends safe from foodborne illness. Wash hands. Keep raw food separate from cooked food. Marinate food in the refrigerator, not on the counter. Cook food thoroughly. Refrigerate and freeze food promptly. Keep hot food hot. Keep cold food cold. For physicians and other healthcare professionals looking to learn more about diagnosing and treating foodborne illness this summer, consider taking this free Continuing Medical Education Program developed by FDA, in collaboration with the American Medical Association. Nutrition For educators, summer is a great time to explore new ways to incorporate nutrition-based resources into classroom lesson plans. Science and Our Food Supply is a collection of free supplementary curricula designed for middle and high school teachers that fit easily into science, health, and other class lesson plans. FDA also offers virtual resources to engage students online. The Whyville Snack Shack Games are a fun place for kids ages 9–13 to play games that test their knowledge about using the Nutrition Facts label to make healthier snack choices. Cosmetics and Colors Tattoos are more popular than ever, but over the years, FDA has received hundreds of reports of adverse events involving tattoos. We advise consumers to consider these questions to help make the best choice before getting a tattoo. And what about temporary tattoos? With summer approaching, many people are planning beach vacations, and some are thinking about getting henna tattoos. Henna is approved only for use as a hair dye, not for direct application to the skin.  Black henna often contains an ingredient that can cause bad skin reactions in some people, such as redness, blisters, loss of pigmentation, or even permanent scarring.
