Have broken measuring cups? Use this easy hack to save time!

Hi Reader,

A few years ago, my ¼ cup measuring cup broke. The plastic handle snapped off, leaving barely enough handle to actually hold the measuring cup.

It was about this same time that I noticed the measurement markings on the cup were nearly worn off as well.

I was THISCLOSE to throwing the broken and worn measuring cup in the trash can...

And then I remembered these awesome and practical ways to save time in the kitchen.

Instead of throwing the broken measuring cup away, I put it in our oatmeal container. This simple act has saved me loads of time over the years…

How so?

  • I'm not running back and forth from the pantry, to the counter, to the drawer to get what I need - everything I need is one spot.
  • Since it only ever holds dry oatmeal, there's no need to wash it.
  • I almost always measure in ¼ cup increments (½ cup for breakfast, 2 cups for my husband's favorite granola bars, etc.)
  • It's an easy way to teach the kids how to cook for themselves. I can give them the container and just tell them how many scoops!

In fact, I loved the convenience of having the scoop inside the container so much that not too long after I took the ½ cup measuring cup from the same old set and put it in the flour container.

This makes sense too, because I almost always measure flour in ½ cup increments!

I haven't found a use for the old ⅓ cup just yet (I'm open to ideas if you have them!) and we had to toss the 1 cup measuring cup since the handle took part of the cup with it when it broke.

(Psst! In case you were wondering, we replaced these with a stainless steel set with the measurements engraved so they wouldn't wash off over time.)

It's like the saying goes – it's the little things in life that bring you joy!

Blessings,
