This Halloween feels like a turning point for us. We’re right on the cusp of the tween/teen years for Max (he is almost 12) and even this season, I’ve found so many of our traditions changing. I feel lucky because he still loves to do all the traditions we’ve made, but we’ve added in a few more age appropriate ones now that the kids are bigger. I’ve been in my feels about it all week because I no longer have babies in a pumpkin patch! Max wanted to go to hockey instead of our annual farm festival night for school and none of the kids were as interested in going apple picking. Now trust me, we’ve done a ridiculous amount of fun things for the fall season - and I don’t even mean things that cost money. The kids love to help me decorate for Halloween with stuff we’ve had for almost 15 years. They love to paint pumpkins with their friends and play Halloween bingo with candy corn. But I can still tell that things are changing. Every Halloween since Max has been born, we’ve had a big party with our family. I hesitate to even call it a party, because it’s basically just pre-trick or treating festivities with a chili bar and fun snacks. The kids LOVE trick-or-treating with cousins (and each other!) and for the first time this year, Max had a moment where he thought he may trick-or-treat with friends instead. He decided to stick with his siblings and cousins, but it made me realize that with Halloween on a Saturday this year, it can be a super fun night that we won’t see again for quite a while. No school the next, an hour of sleep gained. So this is the line-up !First, setting the scene. The most important tip my mom always did? Sprinkle cinnamon inside your carved pumpkin (especially the top) and light vanilla candles. The scent is UNREAL!! This is something I remember from my childhood and I do every single year now. The smell brings me back. It’s wonderful. My kids know it by now too. In the morning, I’m going to make cinnamon roll focaccia with my sourdough starter. We’re going to watch Halloween movies all day OR I’m going to put one of those fun Halloween scenes on our TV from youtube. My kids love them! They always set the mood too...
