Sourdough Starter from Scratch Challenge 2.0

Hello,

Thanks so much for joining the Sourdough Starter from Scratch Challenge!

In this challenge, we are going to build a sourdough starter from scratch together. Starting tomorrow, every day for the next 7 days, you will receive a short video (roughly one minute) showing you what to do.

Today, you need to pick up one thing: a bag of flour. If you have access to locally milled, stone-milled flour, that is ideal: the nutrients and minerals in these types of flours will provide excellent food for your starter to thrive.

Health food markets, co-ops, or markets such as Whole Foods often carry freshly milled flour. Here are a few mail-order options:

If you don't have access to this type of flour, pick up a bag of King Arthur or Bob's Red Mill bread or all-purpose flour, organic if possible.

What Else Do You Need?

  • Optional: Ambient Temperature Thermometer: This will help you accurately gauge the temperature of the cozy spaces you create to help your starter thrive.

Final Note

This will be a zero-waste exercise! By the end of the 7 days, you will have a vat of discard, and I will send you specific recipes that will help you put every gram of that discard to excellent use.

If you have any questions along the way, please ask in this post: How to Build A Sourdough Starter from Scratch.

Till tomorrow, Friends!

Happy Cooking,

Alexandra Stafford
