| Public Can Submit Redistricting Plans The state legislature launched a public redistricting website ahead of redrawing congressional district boundaries. The site allows Ohioans to propose maps. The online portal is available here. All submitted plans will be publicly visible. State lawmakers must pass a congressional map by Sept. 30, with 60% approval needed in each chamber, including half of Democrats. Political groups are organizing to monitor Ohio's redistricting effort, which comes amid high-profile redistricting fights in Texas and California. | New State Laws to Take Effect Eight new Ohio laws take effect this month, including driver education requirements and a ban on quotas for traffic tickets and arrests. Senate Bill 114, effective Sept. 30, prohibits arrest and citation quotas for law enforcement agencies. The measure passed unanimously in both chambers of the legislature. House Bill 96, the state operating budget, requires Ohioans younger than 21 to complete an approved driver education course before obtaining a license. The same measure strengthens cybersecurity standards for local governments. Another new law, House Bill 64, lowers the age for discounted resident hunting and fishing licenses from 66 to 65. | Kayaker Begins 7,000-Mile Trip Joseph Solomon began a 7,000-mile kayaking trip to promote mental health awareness. Solomon launched on Monday from Riverside Park in Cincinnati, with plans to paddle along rivers, lakes, and the Atlantic coast before returning to the Buckeye State. "I want to inspire others to seek help if they need it," said Solomon, who previously attempted a 1,600-mile kayak journey from Cincinnati to the Gulf of Mexico. | |
