The action also directed federal agency heads to identify emergency authorities to expedite energy production and processing. According to Trump, the goal is to make the U.S. a "manufacturing nation once again." In addition, Trump signed orders reversing bans on coast water drilling and electric vehicle adoption and lifting the freeze on LNG export permits. Read the full text of the order here. | Laken Riley Act Passes Senate The Senate voted 64-35 on Monday to approve an amended Laken Riley Act, sending the legislation back to the House for final consideration and expected passage. Named after a 22-year-old nursing student who was murdered by an illegal Venezuelan immigrant last year, the act would allow for the mandatory detention of non-citizens convicted of, or charged with, burglary, larceny, theft, or shoplifting. Some Senate Democrats, despite the bill's bipartisan support, were frustrated by their inability to amend the legislation as it surpassed the 60-vote filibuster threshold.
The bill will mark the first policy legislation of the new Congress. President Donald Trump said he would sign it "within a week or so." | Rare Snowfall Blankets the South A historic winter storm, driven by a polar vortex, has brought record-setting snow and ice to the Gulf Coast, with cities like Houston and New Orleans experiencing rare and significant snowfall.
