Just hours after taking office Monday, President Donald Trump granted clemency to approximately 1,500 defendants convicted of crimes related to the Jan. 6, 2021 protests at the U.S. Capitol.

Of those, 48 are North Carolinians whose crimes range from assaulting police officers to seditious conspiracy.

Trump's executive order commuted sentences or extended full pardons to all who were charged, and instructed the Attorney General to release those imprisoned "immediately" and to "pursue dismissal with prejudice to the government of all pending indictments against individuals for their conduct."

Around 300 prosecutions remained pending earlier this month, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Read the executive order here.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for coastal North Carolina that extends to 8 a.m. this morning, with 2-4 inches of snow projected to fall overnight in most areas, and 5 or more inches possible further east.

Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative prepared for potential power outages ahead of the storm on Tuesday.

Charlotte and the Triangle are under Winter Weather Advisories that extend through 9 a.m. in Charlotte and 7 a.m. in the Triangle. Cold Weather Advisories remain in effect until noon in Charlotte and 10 a.m. in the Triangle.

Local meteorologists projected 1-2 inches of snow in Charlotte and southeastern parts of the Triangle overnight, and less than an inch in northwestern counties.

Article Icon 1 Appalachian Trail Hiking Registrations Down

The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) reports that thru-hike registrations are down by nearly 30% compared to where they were this time last year.

Around 1,700 thru-hikers had registered their hike by mid-January 2024, whereas 1,200 registrations have been reported so far this year.

Potential hikers may be rethinking their plans since some sections of the trail remain closed due to damage from Hurricane Helene. Also, surrounding trail towns like Hot Springs are still repairing flood damage to infrastructure and accommodations that serve hikers.
