Snow in the Forecast

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for much of north Florida, extending as far south as Alachua County, while three northwest Florida counties are under a Winter Storm Warning.

Up to three inches of snow and sleet are possible along the I-10 corridor in the Florida Panhandle late Tuesday into Wednesday, while cold rain and freezing temperatures are expected in Central Florida.

This is the first Winter Storm Watch issued for any part of the state since January 2018.

Schools will be closed today and tomorrow in several counties, including Escambia, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa counties.

Rubio Confirmed Secretary of State

On Monday, the Senate confirmed Marco Rubio as Secretary of State, making him the first of President Donald Trump's Cabinet nominees to win the upper chamber's approval.

The Senate unanimously confirmed Rubio, 99 to 0. Rubio has represented Florida in the Senate since 2011. He resigned Monday upon Trump's inauguration.

It's tradition for the Senate to convene immediately after the ceremonial inauguration to begin appointing the new president's team, particularly the national security officials.

Another pick, John Ratcliffe for CIA director, is expected to get a swift vote. Action on others, including former combat veteran and Fox News host Pete Hegseth for defense secretary, is expected later in the week.

Trump Selects UF Official for Education Role

Penny Schwinn, who served as part of former University of Florida President Ben Sasse's cabinet, has been selected by President Donald Trump as Deputy Secretary of Education, the second highest-ranking education official in the country.

Schwinn served as Tennessee's Commissioner of Education before Sasse hired her in 2023. During her tenure in Tennessee, she implemented a school voucher program and helped overhaul the state's school funding formula.

Trump wrote on social media, "A former teacher herself, Penny became the founding principal of a charter school, because she believes in the power of School Choice, and is committed to delivering the American Dream to the next Generation by returning Education BACK TO THE STATES."
