Record Cold Temps to Blanket US

The polar vortex is delivering a deep freeze to nearly 300 million Americans this weekend.

A developing coastal storm will likely dump moderate-to-heavy snow in several major cities from the mid-Atlantic to the Northeast on Sunday, including New York City, which is predicted to get 3 to 6 inches of snow. A wide swath of 4 to 8 inches of snowfall is expected from West Virginia to Maine.

As the cold snap progresses into the south, cities along the Gulf Coast may get frozen precipitation, including Houston and New Orleans.

At least 19 record-cold high temperatures are expected from the Plains into the East. Forecast temperatures will be 25-30 degrees below average for this time of year. Portions of North Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin have an extreme cold warning in effect as wind chills may reach as low as -50°F.

Trump Signals Reprieve on TikTok Ban

President-elect Donald Trump said on Saturday that he will "most likely" give TikTok a 90-day reprieve from a ban in the U.S. after he takes office Monday.

Tech observers and TikTok users are waiting to see what happens next with a ban on the social media platform scheduled to go into effect at midnight on Sunday, unless Chinese parent company ByteDance sells the app to an American entity.

RedNote, another Chinese-owned app, has been the most downloaded free app on Apple's app store in the U.S. since Tuesday. The photo and video-sharing platform has often been compared to Instagram. RedNote, just like TikTok, could face an ultimatum to divest, or be banned.

Jury Finds CNN Liable in Defamation Case

A Florida jury found that CNN defamed a U.S. Navy veteran in a 2021 story about people paid to rescue endangered Afghans following the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan.

The jury awarded $5 million in compensatory damages to Zachary Young, who blamed CNN for destroying his business. A CNN segment portrayed Young's work helping corporate clients extract workers from Afghanistan after the government collapsed as "exploitation" and part of deals in a black market.

Young's legal team obtained damning CNN internal messages through discovery, repeatedly showing staffers expressing overt hostility towards the Navy veteran.

A CNN spokesperson said, "We remain proud of our journalists and are 100% committed to strong, fearless and fair-minded reporting at CNN, though we will of course take what useful lessons we can from this case."
