Article Icon 1Winter Weather Shuts Down Houston Airports

Houston's two largest airports are closed today as Southeast Texas bears the brunt of a winter storm affecting much of the state. Forecasts call for 3-5 inches of snow by the end of the day for most of the area, though some places could see even more.

In addition to Houston area school districts being closed, dozens of schools in Central Texas and around Austin and San Antonio—where 1-3 inches of snow and sleet are expected—have canceled classes today. UT and Texas A&M are also closed.

On Sunday, Houston Mayor John Whitmire said officials are "doing everything possible from the city to prepare for this winter storm," but he urged residents to "use common sense and be smart."

During his inaugural address Monday, President Donald Trump promised a series of executive actions to secure the border and enforce federal immigration law, marking a distinct reversal from the policies of the previous administration.

Trump authorized the U.S. military to help secure the nation's border with Mexico by declaring a national emergency, reinstated his "remain in Mexico" policy for asylum seekers, designated Mexican human trafficking cartels as terrorist organizations, and invoked the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to facilitate the removal of violent international gang members.

Trump also announced that he would end the practice of granting U.S. citizenship to the children of illegal aliens, a move some critics have said would require amending the Constitution.

"As commander in Chief, I have no higher responsibility than to defend our country from threats and invasions, and that is exactly what I am going to do," Trump said.

Article Icon 1Historic Aircraft Carrier Headed to Brownsville

The USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67), a decommissioned U.S. Navy aircraft carrier, is on its way to Brownsville, where it is scheduled to be dismantled upon arrival in about two weeks.

Commissioned in 1968, the carrier was deployed 18 times before its retirement in 2005, often to the Mediterranean Sea and the Middle East. During Operation Desert Storm in 1991, it launched 114 air strikes over a 42-day period against Saddam Hussein's forces.

The last conventionally powered aircraft carrier in existence, the John F. Kennedy has been docked in Philadelphia since being removed from service. In 2021, International Shipbreaking Limited purchased it for $0.01.

Rear Adm. Bill Greene said the ship "will always be remembered as a symbol of enduring freedom and a beacon of hope and peace during difficult times in our nation." Meanwhile, a new USS John F. Kennedy (CVN-79) is expected to be delivered to the Navy this year.
