A temporary statewide ban on poultry sales does not apply to retail sales or commercial operations, agricultural officials said.

The ban applies to flea markets and auctions. Also banned are poultry exhibitions, shows, swaps, and meets. The ban was ordered pending more testing of possible bird flu cases.

Many news outlets initially reported the ban extended to sales of all poultry products, based on a Jan. 17 press release from the state.

A total ban would cripple one of Georgia's key industries, with $8 billion in poultry and egg sales reported in 2022, according to the latest Census of Agriculture data.
