DeSantis: Train Law Enforcement in Immigration

Gov. Ron DeSantis wants the power to suspend or criminally charge local officials who fail to train at least 10% of their law enforcement staff to detain and deport undocumented immigrants.

In a four-page memo to legislative leaders, DeSantis said he wants to make it mandatory for all law enforcement agencies and local governments to cooperate with the Department of Homeland Security to help enforce federal immigration law.

DeSantis wants to require all local governments to participate in what is currently a voluntary federal program enacted in 1996. It allows the Department of Homeland Security to deputize state and local law enforcement officers to enforce immigration laws.

Under the proposal, elected officials and law enforcement officers who refuse to cooperate would face criminal charges and possible suspension.

25-Year-Old Double Murder Solved with DNA

Sheriff’s detectives on the Treasure Coast have made an arrest in a cold-case killing that happened 25 years ago near Fort Pierce. DNA advances were credited with helping track down the suspect.

Julian Romero, 58, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the October 2000 deaths of Robert Hardwick, 77, and Vernice Reese, 58. At the time they were killed, the victims were planning to get married.

Romero, a Honduran citizen, was already behind bars. He is serving a life sentence in an unrelated case from Broward County on charges of rape, kidnapping, and sexual assault.
