Last November we did a round trip of the "Golden Triangle" in the USA, starting in San Francisco, onto Las Vegas (again haha!) and finally LA. It was a 10 day trip overall, and aside from the jet-lag absolutely killing us, we had such a good time exploring new places. Now obviously I can't travel without sharing the food highlights of the trip. So here's some great food that we enjoyed whilst in San Francisco, and for anyone visiting there yourself, I hope it gives you inspiration of a few restaurants to visit or at least gives you a small insight into what the San Fran food scene has to offer.
Let me tell you about this quaint, lovely Italian restaurant in San Francisco; Bocconcino, North Beach.
The North Beach area of San Fran is actually the name for it's "Little Italy," where there are many Italian-inspired restaurants, bars and shops.
We chose this cosy looking place that seemed to be popular with the locals, and it was a great choice! Although the restaurant was busy, the restaurant owner got us a table quickly, and we immediately felt welcome. We decided we wanted to share a pizza and pasta dish and went with;
- Pinsa Salsiccia - mozzarella, sausage and onions. This was a lovely pizza to share with lots of toppings
- Special - Rigatoni with a ragu style sauce - the sauce was made with slow cooked beef and onions rather than being heavy with tomato, which was rich and absolutely delicious. The restaurant kindly and cleverly served the pasta into smaller individual portions for us, as I had mentioned we wanted to share.
- Complimentary bread & oils
- Beers
We thoroughly enjoyed the meal, and I just had to give this venue a shout-out for anyone visiting San Fran looking for a classy Italian restaurant.
➡️FOOD FACT: Pinsa is a type of pizza that originated in ancient Rome and is made using a unique hand-pressing technique to create a light and airy crust
Next stop - we had a SMASHING Mexican meal at Bonita Taqueria & Rotisserie down Polk Street. After visiting Greens Sports Bar on Polk St., we stumbled across this understated and down to earth Mexican Eatery, and we were so pleased we did! The food was fresh, authentic, and delicious.
We enjoyed;
- Mexican Street Tacos with Pork, Beef and Chicken
- Classic Cheese Quesadilla
- Complimentary Chips and Dips
A very comforting, late night meal. Highly recommended if you're in the North area of San Francisco.
Other highlights;
A fellow foodie @scoff.menu recommended me to try a clam chowder bowl down at Pier 39 in San Fran, and I can't thank them enough. This meal is comforting, tasty, fun to eat out of the bread bowl - we ate every last crumb. They're available in a lot of local places to the pier, we headed into the warmth at Pier Market Restaurant. We also shared some garlic fries which appear often on menus in this area. Wow, they were packed with a powerful garlic punch!! Highly recommend doing the bowl and fries as a lunch between 2.
Hot dog stands were EVERYWHERE in San Fran (and LA). So, as we were strolling through Golden Gate Park we just had to have one. We opted for ALL the toppings of course, which you could help yourself to. Bit of a messy meal walking through through the park, but so worth it. Get involved in one of the hot dog stands dotted around the city, you won't regret it.
Last but definitely not least, I LOVE an American diner breakfast. We headed to Mason Diner round the corner from Hotel G, and enjoyed bottomless cups of Joe. I went for the veggie omelette with hash brown. Sooo good, packed full of crunchy veggies. Ben went with the Philly steak scramble and absolutely loved it. Breakfasts in the USA are definitely one of my favourite things to go out to eat.
