Good Morning! On this day in 1987, Roy Romer was inaugurated as the 39th Governor of Colorado. Romer was reelected in 1990 and 1994, becoming the last Colorado governor to serve three terms before voter-adopted term limits were implemented.

In today's Top Stories, we honor former Colorado football coach Bill McCartney, who passed away Friday. We also bid farewell to the Broncos' post-season bid in sports.

Former Colorado Coach Bill McCartney Dies

Former Colorado football coach Bill McCartney, who led the Buffaloes to their only national championship in 1990, passed away Friday at the age of 84.

Diagnosed with dementia and Alzheimer's in 2016, McCartney was the winningest coach in school history, with a 93-55-5 record during his tenure from 1982 to 1994.

He also coached the program's first Heisman Trophy winner, Rashaan Salaam, in 1994 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2013.

McCartney transformed the program after his 1982 hiring, leading to three Big Eight championships from 1989 to 1991. His standout 1990 season culminated in an Orange Bowl victory against Notre Dame and an AP national championship.

Following his coaching career, McCartney co-founded Promise Keepers, a Christian men's ministry he established in 1990 after converting from Catholicism.

Arctic Blast Forecast for MLK Weekend

Colorado braces for successive winter storms, with snowfall beginning Wednesday night through Friday morning, followed by a severe Arctic blast during Martin Luther King Jr. weekend.

The National Weather Service predicts 2-6 inches of snow and wind chills of -9 degrees for the Denver metro area, with current temperatures already running 10 degrees below January averages.

Meteorologists warn of an even more extreme system arriving next weekend that could plunge temperatures to -15 degrees Fahrenheit, with an 80% chance of Denver experiencing subzero temperatures in what forecasters describe as a classic setup for extreme cold in eastern Colorado.

Horse Rescued from Icy Pond

Loveland Fire Rescue Authority rescued a horse that fell through a frozen pond last week.

The horse had wandered through a broken fence onto a frozen pond, where its weight caused the ice to break. The horse fell into the icy water and was unable to reach the shore on its own.

Firefighters in ice rescue suits used axes and sledgehammers to break a path through the ice and guided the horse safely to shore. See photos here.

The operation involved coordination with local agencies, including the Berthoud Fire Protection District and the Larimer County Sheriff's Office. Fire officials reminded the public never to attempt to rescue animals from ice and to call 911 instead.
