Hundreds of Crashes After Winter Storm

The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) responded to 648 crashes across the state during Saturday's winter storm, including three fatal accidents.

Officials reported that 518 crashes resulted in property damage and 127 led to injuries, while THP troopers assisted 874 stranded motorists.

The agency's dispatchers handled 1,708 calls for assistance as troopers worked with TDOT and TEMA to clear roadways and respond to emergencies amid harsh weather conditions. Watch a video report here.

In a Facebook post on Saturday evening, THP reported that its officers had been "working around the clock to keep Tennesseans safe."

State Considers Takeover of Memphis Schools

As the Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) board deliberates on whether to terminate Superintendent Marie Feagins' contract, state lawmakers in Nashville are closely monitoring the situation.

House Speaker Cameron Sexton has suggested the state could intervene, potentially taking over the local school district, if Feagins is removed. "There are nuclear options. We could come in and start running the schools ourselves," Sexton said.

The school board's resolution to terminate Feagins has sparked strong opposition from parents, teachers, and local leaders.

The crisis stems from board allegations that Feagins was dishonest and mishandled finances—charges she denies—with pivotal meetings set for Jan. 13-15 that will determine her fate and potentially the district's governance.

Memphis Baker Part of TikTok Lawsuit

A Memphis baker and TikTok creator with 2.4 million followers, Chloe's Giant Cookies, is among eight content creators challenging the federal TikTok ban before the U.S. Supreme Court this Friday.

Chloe Joy Sexton, owner of Chloe's Giant Cookies, argues the platform is "integral" to her business, while the Biden administration defends the law as necessary to address national security concerns about Chinese control.

TikTok has announced plans to shut down U.S. operations by Jan. 19 unless the Supreme Court intervenes to block or delay the law requiring its Chinese parent company to sell the platform.
