Legislature Opens with School Safety

The state legislature convenes for its annual session today, with lawmakers pledging to take another look at ways to prevent school shootings.

Other topics lawmakers are expected to discuss are disaster relief, tort reform, legalized sports betting, and prisons.

The focus on school safety follows the deadly September shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder that killed two students and two teachers, and injured seven others.

Greater use of school resource officers, metal detectors, and other security measures are among the school safety ideas under consideration.

Pets also got in on the fun, with many getting a chance to play in the snow for the first time. The last time metro Atlanta received more than a dusting of snow was January 2018.

Some areas received as much as 5 inches and Atlanta's official total—taken at the airport—came in at 2.1 inches, with other metro neighborhoods getting upward of 3 inches.

The winter fun offered an escape from the worst aspects of the storm: freezing rain and ice, hazardous driving conditions, damaged trees, and power outages to more than 230,000.

Town's Law Requires Guns for Homeowners

The town of Kennesaw is one of very few in the U.S. that requires heads of households to own a gun, an ordinance dating back to the 1980s.

Most citizens say they're happy with the law, and city officials say they have no record of a local homeowner being prosecuted for being unarmed.

The mandate is rare but not unique, as it turns out. Five other U.S. cities have similar laws in place, including Gun Barrel City, Texas, and Virgin, Utah.

A new map of states with the most guns shows Georgia ranks toward the middle of the pack, with 49% of the adult population owning a firearm. Montana and Wyoming lead with 66%.
