| Atlanta Preps for 'Busiest Day' Georgians might need a day off after next Monday's Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, with the college football title game in Atlanta and President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration adding to what's being called "Atlanta's busiest day." Trump's inauguration activities in Washington, D.C., are set to draw big TV viewership given the state's key role in his election and his naming of many Georgians to his administration. Want to attend in person? Contact your congressman for free tickets. The College Football Playoff championship game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium will cap several days of concerts and other public events. The game pits Ohio State against Notre Dame, with airlines adding flights into Atlanta to accommodate fans. Martin Luther King Jr. Day activities for Monday span the state and include free admission to national parks, events at The King Center in Atlanta, a 5K in Doraville, and a breakfast at an Atlanta community center. | Legislative Session Formally Opens The state legislature convened for a new two-year term Monday, with Republicans holding a 33-23 majority in the state Senate and a 100-80 edge in the state House. The first bill introduced in the Georgia Senate was a ban on men participating in women's sports. Eighteen new House members and four new senators took their oaths. State Rep. Jon Burns, R-Newington, and state Sen. John Kennedy, R-Macon, were elected to leadership positions. This year's session is scheduled to end on April 4. New this year, lawmakers could not pre-file proposed legislation ahead of the session's start. | New Congressman No Stranger to D.C. The power corridors of Washington, D.C., aren't new to Georgia's lone freshman congressman, U.S. Rep. Brian Jack, R-Peachtree City, who served as a congressional liaison in the prior Trump administration. The 36-year-old's resume made him an easy choice to serve as a leader of the GOP freshman class, and last week he gave his first floor speech, praising Jimmy Carter and recalling times Carter visited his hometown. Jack received strong backing from Trump, running an ad where Trump repeatedly says his name and then quips, "You can do it either way: Jack Brian or Brian Jack." | |
