NCDOT announced a goal Wednesday to stabilize I-40 westbound lanes near the North Carolina-Tennessee border by early 2025. A 40-mile section of the highway is currently closed in both directions; a large chunk of it fell into the Pigeon River after Hurricane Helene.

NCDOT is coordinating efforts with Tennessee DOT as engineers determine how best to restore the land that once supported I-40’s eastbound lanes.

Meanwhile, the I-77 widening project near Charlotte has moved down the priority list as Helene-damaged roads moved up, with officials suggesting a private contractor may be the best way to move that project along.

In Southport, NCDOT reopened a section of N.C. 211 that closed Sept. 16 after heavy rains caused extensive damage to a bridge there.

Gov. Roy Cooper, Sen. Thom Tillis, and Rep. Chuck Edwards visited Asheville on Thursday to survey damage from Hurricane Helene and to ensure the restoration of critical drinking water infrastructure in western North Carolina.

The storm-related death toll in North Carolina reached 91 Thursday as search-and-recovery efforts continued.

Cooper also signed the General Assembly’s unanimously passed disaster relief package into law Thursday, ensuring an additional $273 million goes to recovery efforts.

The bill loosens state regulations to make recovery work go faster; ensures teachers still get paid despite school being out; and extends deadlines for DMV fees, taxes, and hearings tied to hurricane survivors as they work to rebuild their communities.

Article Icon 1Trump and Stein Lead in New NC Poll

A CBS 17/Emerson College/The Hill poll of North Carolina voters released Thursday gives Former President Donald Trump a 50% to 49% lead over Vice President Kamala Harris in the race for president.

The poll shows a 55% to 42% break for Trump among men and a 52% to 45% break for Harris among women. Trump held a 1% lead in August, but it flipped to Harris in September. The October poll returns the 1% lead to Trump.

Both campaigns continue courting North Carolina voters. JD Vance held a town hall in Greensboro Thursday, with former NASCAR driver Danica Patrick on the agenda to speak.

Harris will make her 19th visit to the state with a campaign stop in Greensboro on Sunday.

The new poll also gives Attorney General Josh Stein a 50% to 36% lead over his gubernatorial opponent Mark Robinson, up from his 47% to 41% lead in August.
