State revenues surged in September as tax collections climbed and tax refund payments shrank.

Taxpayers not subject to withholding made their first-quarter estimated income tax payments, up by one-third over the previous quarter. Payroll tax revenue also jumped by 5.5%.

"This positive trend is fueled by our consistently strong labor market and business investment," Gov. Glenn Youngkin announced.

Stephen Cummings, the finance secretary, told state lawmakers that year-to-date revenues are ahead by $601.4 million and that sales taxes also increased slightly. The personal income tax increases more than made up for a drop of $109 million in corporate income tax revenue.

Ron Sanchez will lead the University of Virginia men's basketball team as the interim head coach this season following the sudden retirement of the program's longtime head, Tony Bennett.

Sanchez coached UNC Charlotte for five years before returning to the Hoos as associate head coach last season. He coached with Bennett for more than 12 years overall.

In an emotional farewell news conference last week, Bennett told reporters, "I'm no longer the best coach to lead this program in this current environment," meaning the era of NIL deals and frequent player transfers via the portal.

Bennett won a national title in 2019 but also suffered several early losses in the NCAA tournament, including a first round loss to 16-seed UMBC when UVA was a one-seed in 2018.

UVA says it will conduct a national search for a permanent coach.

The Washington Commanders cruised past the Carolina Panthers yesterday, 40-7.

The real news, however, is that rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels left the game early in the first quarter with a rib injury. He returned to the sideline in his street clothes at halftime.

According to a source within the team, X-rays didn't reveal a serious injury. "He's good," the source told an ESPN reporter.

Daniels is a strong candidate for Rookie of the Year, and Washington improved to 5-2 on the season.
