Article Icon 1Farmers Under 'Unprecedented Financial Strain'

Last week, Florida requested financial assistance for the state's farmers from the federal government through the Farm Service Agency and other federal programs.

According to state officials, the damage caused by Hurricane Milton to farmers and ranchers may double the statewide agricultural losses from three other storms that have impacted Florida since August 2023.

Milton caused between $1.5 billion and $2.5 billion in crop damage, on top of more than $1.5 billion in damages already sustained from hurricanes Idalia, Debby, and Helene.

A state report identified major structural impacts on nurseries, cattle ranches, and cow-milking operations. Crops such as cotton, peanuts, rice, vegetables, and various fruits, including citrus, experienced moderate to significant damage.

Article Icon 1Rays Assessing Stadium Damage

The Tampa Bay Rays said it may take weeks to fully assess the damage done to Tropicana Field by Hurricane Milton.

Access to the stadium is severely restricted due to safety concerns, particularly the structure supporting what’s left of the Teflon-coated fiberglass roof and team offices.

With the stadium potentially out of commission for 2025, the team is exploring options for home games, which are scheduled to start on March 27 against the Colorado Rockies.

If the cost of restoring Tropicana Field proves too high, the Rays may need to find a new home for the next three years while their new stadium is under construction.
