Article Icon 1Judge Stops Execution in "Shaken Baby" Case

Thursday's scheduled execution of Robert Roberson was halted in the final 90 minutes by Travis County District Judge Jessica Mangrum, who granted a temporary restraining order.

Roberson, convicted in 2003 for the death of his 2-year-old daughter on a controversial “shaken baby” diagnosis, was saved by a subpoena Wednesday issued by the Texas House Committee on Criminal Jurisprudence.

The subpoena required Roberson to appear in the state House on Monday to discuss his case. The judge concluded the state’s authority to execute Roberson doesn't override the subpoena.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday declined to stay the execution, but the temporary restraining order has postponed it. Attorney General Ken Paxton is expected to appeal the ruling and the outcome could change overnight.

Article Icon 1Disaster Declared in Laredo E. Coli Crisis

Texas Governor Greg Abbott declared a state of disaster in Webb County after E. coli was detected in Laredo’s water system.

The declaration mobilizes state resources and permits regulatory suspensions to facilitate a faster emergency response. It also allows city officials to request federal assistance.

The contamination prompted a citywide boil water advisory last week. The city set up water distribution points, and Mayor Victor Trevino has prioritized close collaboration with the state to protect public health.

Nearly 30 percent of security cameras along the U.S.-Mexico border are inoperable, according to an internal Border Patrol memo.

The issue has raised alarm among agents, who say the malfunctioning cameras compromise border security and pose a risk to their safety.

Around 150 cameras in use since 2011 are awaiting repair by the Federal Aviation Administration, the agency contracted to service the cameras. Most of the working cameras were installed more recently and use newer technology.

Somalia is facing a devastating combination of natural disasters, global conflicts, widespread poverty, and disease outbreaks. East Africa has just endured its worst drought in 40 years, leaving tens of millions without access to clean water, wiping out millions of livestock and destroying crops. With domestic food production crippled, Somalia has relied heavily on imports—90% of its wheat coming from Russia and Ukraine—until those shipments stopped.

Now, two in five children in Somalia suffer from acute malnutrition, and cholera is spreading in some regions. The food crisis, compounded by global humanitarian aid being redirected to Europe and the Middle East, has created a perfect storm, leading to a sharp rise in child malnutrition.
