| Friday, October 11, 2024 | | Good morning! On this day in 1809, western explorer Meriwether Lewis was found dead near Nashville, Tennessee, three years after completing his mission to explore the Louisiana Purchase. Nobody knows how he died, but most suspect it was suicide. The Virginia Flyover is pleased to take you on a voyage of discovery five days a week. | Voting Underway with a Lawsuit Pending A lawsuit filed in federal court accused Gov. Glenn Youngkin and Attorney General Jason Miyares of illegally purging voter rolls. Youngkin signed an executive order in August requiring daily updates to remove ineligible voters, and two voter rights groups say that this action violates a federal 90-day quiet period ahead of November’s vote. The governor’s spokesman waved off the suit. “Every step in the established list maintenance process is mandated by Virginia law and begins after an individual indicates they are not a citizen,” Christian Martinez said. Early voting started in mid-September. According to the Virginia Public Access Project, vote totals are running behind where they were at this point in 2020, a year when a total of 2.81 million people voted early. In addition to voting for president and U.S. senator, Virginians are also voting on an amendment to the state constitution. If enacted, the amendment would provide tax relief for surviving family members of military members killed in the line of duty. | Northern Lights in Our Skies Virginians rarely see the Northern Lights, but this week is an exception. Many who stayed up Monday night into Tuesday already enjoyed a sky show. The Space Weather Prediction Center says another event is possible on Friday night, as a strong geomagnetic storm sends particles crashing into the Earth at 1.5 million miles per hour. That eruption may cause problems with electronics and power lines, but it will certainly light up the atmosphere and should be visible where you live, unless there are too many clouds. The National Weather Service is providing a 30 Minute Forecast so you can see conditions before venturing outside. | Fall Fun in Virginia The weather across Virginia has been perfect recently, and the upcoming forecast (see above) also looks good. There are plenty of places to celebrate fall outdoors. Whether you are in Luray or Danville, Christiansburg or Centreville, Waynesboro or Orange, take this opportunity to lose yourself in a corn maze. If you prefer to pick up a gourd, there are a number of pumpkin patches around as well. You may not meet up with Charlie Brown’s Great Pumpkin, but you’ll undoubtedly find a great pumpkin somewhere in the state. Finally, grab something sweeter and pick your own apples. Our Commonwealth boasts more than 100 orchards and produces more than 5 billion apples annually, enough for each of us to enjoy a slice of warm apple pie. Like The Virginia Flyover?
