Motivation is short-lived.

Hey there reader,

One of the most common questions I get from readers is, "how do I get motivated?"

Of course, it comes in other forms, such as:

"How do I get motivated to exercise in the morning?"

"How do I get motivated to eat healthier?"

"How do I get the motivation to get back on track after vacation?"

Now I'm not saying motivation isn't necessary or a thing....but if there's one thing I learned in my 10+ years on my weight loss journey, it's that motivation is short-lived.

Sure it gets you excited and starts the process of convincing your brain that change is good.

However, motivation, for a variety of reasons, eventually goes away.

Instead, it's more important to focus on becoming and staying disciplined.

Disciplined means you do it (exercise, eat healthily, get back on track) even when you don't want to; this will keep you moving towards your weight loss goals.

If we wait for motivation to kick in every time we need to make a healthy choice, then change will never happen—kind of like finding the time. If we don't prioritize the time, then things like meal prep and exercise will find their way to the back burner week after week.

As adults, we don't have anyone telling us what to do. People might try, but we don't have to listen. We make our own choices. Unfortunately, that means we have to suffer the consequences of those choices. If we choose pizza over salad and the couch over the treadmill, then eventually, those choices will result in tighter jeans. It's just the way it is.

Self-discipline makes us responsible for our own choices. Because, in all honesty, we are in control of our own decisions.

Some people are naturally more self-disciplined than others. However, I genuinely believe becoming a disciplined person can be learned by putting in place habits and routines that promote a healthy, disciplined lifestyle.

You might be surprised to know that I'm not a naturally disciplined person. I wish; I'm more of a disciplined person stuck in a hot mess person's body. True story. πŸ˜‚

Seriously, there are days I leave the house with slippers on and don't even remember where I need to go. I get distracted and lose focus very quickly. It's a constant battle.

However, I learned that if I wanted to succeed with my personal and business goals, I needed to become a disciplined person. It was the only way I could accomplish anything. I mean, watching Bravo all day will not pay the bills or get me in a smaller size.

Creating discipline in my life required strategy.

I do think there is a place for motivation. I love to be motivated and inspired - in fact, I live for it.

However, to move past the motivation, make real changes in your life, and experience success, you must learn to be disciplined.

Talk to you soon.
