Article Icon 1Judge Rebukes DA Willis for Open Records Delay

A judge sharply criticized Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis for delaying responses to an open records request.

The dispute centers around Willis' refusal to provide documents related to former special prosecutor Nathan Wade.

Despite Willis’ emergency request to quash the subpoena, claiming the request was intended to harass her, the judge admonished her for obstructing the legal process and questioned why she had not complied with the state's Open Records Act.

The judge warned that further delays could result in contempt charges, adding pressure on Willis to comply with the request.

Article Icon 1Setzler: Negligence, Not Abortion Law, Caused Deaths

State Senator Ed Setzler, who sponsored Georgia’s 2019 abortion law, pushed back against claims that the state's strict abortion ban led to the deaths of two women.

Setzler argued that medical staff were negligent in their handling of these cases, saying, "Georgia’s law gave these shamefully unprepared doctors every legal tool they needed to save this mother’s life."

In contrast, Vice President Kamala Harris, on last week’s campaign stop, criticized the state’s abortion law, attributing the deaths of two women to the restrictions.

Gov. Brian Kemp echoed Setzler’s defense of the law, with his spokesman stating that the LIFE Act not only includes support for mothers but also allows for necessary medical interventions in cases of emergency.

Article Icon 1 Fishermen Angle for Access

Georgia outfitters warned lawmakers at a legislative hearing to be cautious when considering new restrictions on fishing and paddling access to rivers and streams.

The issue arose after a landowner restricted fishing on a portion of the Flint River, leading to discussions about which waterways should be considered "navigable."

Georgia last defined what constitutes a "navigable river" in 1863, when rivers were primarily used for transporting freight.

Outfitters emphasized that many businesses rely on access to smaller streams that might not be deemed navigable. Fishing rights are crucial for Georgia's outdoor economy, which contributes billions annually to the state.
