I always balk at the idea that Labor Day is the 'end of summer.' Not only is this blatantly not true (autumnal equinox anyone?), I feel it leads some people to undervalue the spectacular weather that September brings. When the mornings start to cool off and the moisture in the air thins, I'm far more eager to go to the beach or the mountains than I am in the dead heat of summer.
I strongly endorse squeezing every last bit out of summer, which is why I'm filling my September weekends with plenty of beach time, and a few camping excursions upstate for good measure. I'm also aiming to improve my outdoor cooking skills—which has led me to spend time searching around for discounted camp gear.
While many Labor Day sales have passed, There are still some pretty good deals on outdoor kitchen gear floating around in cyberspace, if you know where to look.
An organized galley for on-the-go cooking (25% off)
This Kelty camp galley has plenty of storage space for spices, utensils and other small tools you might need for an outdoor kitchen set up. It's a nice way to keep everything neat and organized and it's easy to hang off the side of a car or from a tree branch.
A full set of tableware for an al fresco dinner (45% off)
Enamel coated steel is a classic choice for outdoor eating for a reason. It's tough, lightweight, and easy to wash. This set, big enough for four, includes mugs, plates and utensils for whatever campfire meals you might cook up.
A versatile and reliable outdoor stove (40% off)
Portable butane stoves are a reliable source of heat for when assembling a campfire isn't feasible—It's also just a whole lot easier cooking over one of these than a pile of wood. You can get a lot of use out of one of these back at home if you need an extra burner on hand.
