At this time of year when everything's grey or brown, when the warmth of the sun is a distant memory, I couldn't be more grateful for citrus.
Every cell of my body is craving a juicy blast of sunshine, and when I'm needing it the most, citrus is there to rescue me! The variety of flavours, colours, sizes, and shapes are bright, refreshing, and tickle the taste buds. Do you feel me?
I love to lean into creative applications of citrus, adding them to savoury dishes like salads, and I really try to stretch how they're traditionally utilized. Think: juice in dressings and sauces, sliced, supremed, and even whole (looking at you kumquat)!
And the irresistable ombrΓ© of offerings always astound me as blood oranges are breathtaking and mild; cara cara oranges are perfectly pink; mineolas are delectably juicy; and the easy-to-peel tangerines and mandarins are the perfect snacking size. It seems the smaller citrus fruits get, the more concentrated the flavour and I'm here for it!
Beyond their exceptional beauty, versatility, and flavour, citrus bring a variety of nutritional benefits to the party: grapefruits are a high-potassium package with lycopene, a phytonutrient with anti-tumor properties; lemons are an amazing purifier and rejuvenator, especially for the liver; and oranges boast the highest vitamin A content of all citrus, and of course give us a boost of vitamin C like the rest of the citrus family.
There's so much to love about these sunny superfoods and I can't wait to hear what you think of the recipes below and look forward to seeing what you create with your favourite fruits during this special in-between time - not quite winter, and not yet spring.
Thinking of each of you friends, from around the world, preparing for a new season ahead (spring or fall to those in the southern hemisphere), and hope wherever you are, you are able to find a slice of sunshine to soothe your cells, body, and heart, too.
In peace and pleasure,
Sarah B
