| | This watercolor of the Boone chestnut, by artist Ellen I. Schutt, is just one of over 7,000 watercolors in the USDA Pomological Watercolor Collection. A legion of men and women watercolorists created not only beautiful renderings, but scientifically accurate records of fruits and nuts. Reproducing the watercolors in USDA publications allowed readers to more accurately identify varieties in the field. The Boone chestnut (named for American frontiersman Daniel Boone) is featured in the 1913 Yearbook of Agriculture. Check out page 122 to learn the history of the Boone chestnut.
