MedWatch - The FDA Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program TOPIC: Limited Batches of Scent Free Hand Sanitizer by artnaturals: Recall - Due to Presence of Impurities AUDIENCE: Consumer, Patient, Health Professional ISSUE: artnaturals is recalling 10 lots of artnaturals 8 oz Scent Free Hand Sanitizer. FDA testing identified the 8 oz bottles of Scent Free Hand Sanitizer contained several impurities including unacceptable levels of benzene, acetaldehyde, and acetal. Benzene may cause certain types of cancer in humans. Animal studies show acetaldehyde may cause cancer in humans and may cause serious illness or death. Acetal can irritate the upper respiratory tract, eyes, and skin. While the exact risk from using hand sanitizer containing benzene, acetaldehyde, or acetal is unknown, FDA recommends consumers do not use products with unacceptable levels of benzene, acetaldehyde, or acetal.  To date, artnaturals has not received any reports of adverse events related to this recalled product. BACKGROUND: The product being recalled is used to remove germs on hands that may cause illness when soap and water are not available. RECOMMENDATIONS: Consumers that have this recalled product should stop using and appropriately discard it. Consumers should contact their physician or healthcare provider if they have any questions or concerns related to using this drug product. Health professionals and consumers are encouraged to report adverse events or side effects related to the use of these products to the FDA's MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program: Complete and submit the report online.
