FP-This-Week-tighter
Welcome to This Week. What can think tanks do to combat troubling global trends like authoritarianism, economic protectionism, and threats to human rights and civil liberties? A lot, as it turns out. In a new study from FP Analytics, 51 senior leaders from organizations worldwide and another 322 influential individuals were asked to assess the role and impact of think tanks as well as how they are maintaining transparency and independence while advancing tangible policy reforms. This report also contains specific recommendations for think tanks, donors, and stakeholders.

If you’d like a quick primer, listen to the recording of FP’s recent Virtual Dialogue on the subject, which features experts and practitioners on the role of think tanks in promoting democracy and economic development worldwide.

Also, in the latest episode of The Hidden Economics of Remarkable Women (HERO), hear how one organization is empowering smallholder female dairy producers in Nigeria to combat climate change and stem ongoing violence in the country’s northeast.

Thank you for reading.

Navigating Through Turbulence
Think tanks’ impact on policy in a rapidly changing world

The last few years have seen rises in authoritarianism, economic protectionism, poverty, and threats to human rights and civil liberties, trends that were all further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Efforts to combat such trends take many forms, but this report is particularly concerned with the role and impact of think tanks given their capacity to understand, explain, and shape these trends. Such organizations have proliferated globally since the 1990s, but there has been limited research and a lack of consensus regarding how successful they are in counteracting these negative trends. To explore this topic, FP Analytics conducted an in-depth survey and semi-structured interviews with think tank personnel to highlight the experiences and viewpoints of the think tank staff working on the ground to advance democracy, economic openness, human rights, and poverty reduction in their home countries.

The Hidden Economics of Remarkable Women (HERO)
A new Foreign Policy series hosted by Reena Ninan about women creating change through economic empowerment.

In the latest episode, we look at the Advancing Local Dairy Development in Nigeria (ALDDN) program. It focuses on smallholder female dairy producers who make the majority of milk products in their country. Violence between cow herders and farmers has killed more people in recent years in northeastern Nigeria than the Boko Haram insurgency, according to the International Crisis Group. One solution to this conflict is creating a better environment for dairy producers so cattle herders do not need to travel as far to get feed for their cows. This would impact not only the country’s security but also the livelihoods of many rural Nigerian women.

To learn more about how the ALDDN program is trying to empower women, mitigate the effects of climate change, and decrease conflict in Nigeria, listen to our latest episode here, or subscribe on your favorite podcast app.
