Press Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 5, 2021 CONTACT: Chelsea Wuth, 517-241-2112, WuthC@michigan.gov Abbott Laboratories awarded Michigan WIC Program's infant formula rebate contract LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC Program) will implement a new infant formula rebate contract with Abbott Laboratories Inc., effective Nov. 1. The WIC program works to ensure the health of pregnant and postpartum women, infants and children by providing nutrition education, nutritious foods, referrals to health and community services and strong support and encouragement for breastfeeding as the optimal nutrition for infants. WIC offers a wide range of breastfeeding services, including individualized lactation support, peer counselors, prenatal breastfeeding classes and access to breast pumps. In addition, WIC continues to provide infant formula for partially-or non-breastfeeding parents. "We are committed to supporting the tremendous efforts it takes to raise a child, and that starts with supporting the nutrition needs of young Michiganders," said Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, MDHHS chief medical executive and chief deputy for health. "The contract with Abbott Laboratories, Inc., will allow us to continue offering these crucial services." Abbott was awarded the WIC infant formula contract for a five-year term beginning Nov. 1. Michigan WIC's current infant formula contract with Mead Johnson will remain in effect until Oct. 31. Beginning in November, WIC formula benefits will transition from the Mead Johnson Enfamil product to the nutritionally equivalent Abbott Similac product. The Abbott infant formulas available through the WIC contract will include: • Similac Advance Engaging in an infant formula rebate contract is a USDA WIC requirement. Michigan's WIC Program receives a rebate from the contracted formula manufacturer on each can of formula provided to WIC infants and the Michigan WIC program serves approximately 50,000 infants each month. The Infant Formula Rebate allows the WIC Program to enroll more infants, women and children. In addition to breastfeeding support and infant formula, the WIC Program also provides supplemental foods such as milk, cheese, yogurt, fruits and vegetables, whole grains, juice, eggs, cereal, peanut butter and dry beans.
